What the Area Converter Does and Who It's For
This area converter changes a measurement from one unit to another — square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometers, square miles, square yards and more. Type a number, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, and the tool returns the equivalent value.
It is built for anyone working with land or floor space: real-estate buyers comparing listings that mix square feet and square meters, farmers and surveyors switching between acres and hectares, architects and renovators sizing rooms, and students checking homework. If you have ever seen a plot listed in acres but needed hectares, this is the tool for that.
How the Area Converter Works (The Formula)
Every conversion goes through one base unit: the square meter (m²). The tool first converts your input to square meters, then from square meters to the target unit. This two-step method keeps results consistent across dozens of unit pairs.
The general formula is:
value_in_target = value_in_source × (m² per source unit) ÷ (m² per target unit)
- 1 square foot = 0.092903 m²
- 1 square yard = 0.836127 m²
- 1 acre = 4046.86 m²
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m²
- 1 square kilometer = 1,000,000 m²
- 1 square mile = 2,589,988 m²
Worked Example: Acres to Hectares and Meters to Feet
Suppose a plot of land is listed as 5 acres and you want hectares. Convert to the base unit first: 5 × 4046.86 = 20,234.3 m². Then divide by the m² in one hectare: 20,234.3 ÷ 10,000 = 2.0234 hectares.
Now a second example for indoor space. A room measures 30 square meters and you want square feet. Divide by the m² in one square foot: 30 ÷ 0.092903 = 322.9 square feet. Going the other way, an 800 sq ft apartment is 800 × 0.092903 = 74.32 m².
Tips and Common Mistakes
The most frequent error is mixing length conversion with area conversion. Area is two-dimensional, so the factor is squared. There are 3.28 feet in a meter, but 3.28² = 10.76 square feet in a square meter — not 3.28.
- Don't confuse acres with hectares: a hectare (10,000 m²) is about 2.47 acres, so they are not interchangeable.
- Watch the unit names: square kilometers and square miles differ greatly (1 sq mi ≈ 2.59 sq km).
- Square feet (ft²) is not the same as feet — listings sometimes drop the 'square', so confirm before converting.
- Round only at the end. Rounding mid-calculation introduces error in large land areas.
Factors That Affect the Result
Regional definitions matter. The standard 'international' acre (4046.86 m²) is used almost everywhere, but the rare US survey acre differs by a few parts per million — negligible for most real-estate work but relevant in legal surveys.
Precision of your input also drives accuracy. A plot measured to the nearest acre cannot suddenly become precise to a square meter after conversion. Carry only as many significant figures as your original measurement justifies, and keep both the original and converted values on record for property or planning documents.
