What the Age Calculator Does

This age calculator answers the question "how old am I?" by converting a date of birth into an exact age expressed in years, months, and days. Instead of rounding to a whole number of years, it counts the precise time between your birth date and a target date (today by default, but you can set any date you want).

It is useful for filling in forms that need an exact age, checking eligibility cut-offs for school, retirement, or insurance, calculating a pet's age, working out how old someone will be on a future date, or simply finding out how many days you have been alive. Alongside the years/months/days breakdown, it also reports your total days lived and the number of days until your next birthday.

How It Works: The Formula

The tool does not divide your lifespan by 365. Doing that ignores leap years and gives a misleading result. Instead it counts calendar units directly, borrowing from larger units when needed, the same way you subtract by hand:

• Years = end year - birth year
• Months = end month - birth month
• Days = end day - birth day
• If Days is negative, subtract 1 from Months and add the number of days in the previous month
• If Months is negative, subtract 1 from Years and add 12 months
• Total days lived = the full count of calendar days between the two dates, leap years included
• Days to next birthday = days from today until your birth month and day occur again

A Worked Example

Suppose a person was born on 15 March 1990 and today is 1 June 2026.

Start with years: 2026 - 1990 = 36. Months: 6 - 3 = 3. Days: 1 - 15 = -14. Because the day result is negative, borrow one month: months become 3 - 1 = 2, and add the days in the prior full month (May has 31 days), so days become 31 - 14 = 17. The exact age is 36 years, 2 months, 17 days.

Total days lived from 15 March 1990 to 1 June 2026 is 13,227 days (this span includes 9 leap days). The next birthday, 15 March 2027, is 287 days away.

Factors That Affect the Result

A few real-world details change the output, so it helps to know them in advance:

• Leap years: someone born on 29 February has no birthday in common years. Most calculators roll their birthday to 28 February or 1 March, which can shift the days-to-birthday count by one.
• Time zones: age is normally measured in whole calendar days, so the hour of birth and your current time zone do not change the years/months/days result.
• Month length: borrowing days depends on whether the previous month had 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, which is why two people with similar dates can show different day counts.
• Target date: setting a future date tells you how old you will be then; setting a past date tells you how old you were.

Tips and Common Mistakes

The most frequent error is treating a year as exactly 365 days. Over decades, the missing leap days add up and your total days lived can be off by more than a week. Let the calculator count calendar days rather than estimating.

Double-check the date order you type. Confusing day-month-year with month-day-year is the top cause of wrong answers, especially for dates where the day is 12 or lower. Confirm the birth date is in the past, and remember that age in months is not the same as age in years multiplied by twelve once the leftover days are counted.
